Oh I can hardle wait.......
As it gets closer to the time for Santa to come We here in Frederick,Md have a Kirs Kringle parade. Frederick, Maryland, being of German history, felt a few years back that we had forgotten our past. So we made December 10 th. this year the date of the parade. Hard candy and Candy Canes will be given out during the parade from the costumed people walking in the parade. This historic Santa is of German/Dutch decent. He arrives with his helpers and of course Black Peter. He is for the bad boys and girls. He would go in and give naughty children coal in their stockings. So this Friday will be the parade at 6:30 PM down town from East Street's Shab Row shopping area to Bakers Park where the city will host the City tree lighting. So bundle up the little ones and your selves warm for it will be cold out there. At this time they say we could have some snow flying. See you there!

In my time.....
In my time when I was younger there were lot of different stores in down town Frederick. But Christmas was still a big thing in town. We could find all that we needed in down town. There was not the Malls of today that we have. Yes in the late 1950s we got the 7th Street shopping center. But most of us had to be content with the stores that were down town.
To start the Holiday there was a Santa parade. That was when Santa came to down town. He would have a small house outside of a 5 and 10 cent store. Then they moved him into that store where they gave him a space to have pictures taken with him sitting in a big gold chair. During the day you could find him walking the streets of our small town. He would talk to all the children and find out if they were naughty or good. Once and awhile you could find him looking at the trees at Cappello's food store or the ones next to the F & M Bank. They all smelled so good. There was fur trees and spruces and white needle pines. The Crutchley's Trees were the ones on the side of the bank and he made garlins and wreaths too. He would also have Mistletoe, you know that stuff that people use to kiss under. But it was real!!
Mother would go to Cappello's and buy her groceries there. Mr Cappy or Pappa Cappello would have them bagged and sent to home for us like he did for sooo many people back then. He delivered! They had a big black paneled truck that would come right to your door and bring things. While Mom was there she would place her order for red and green loaf bread. That was for her special parties that she would have. She would also order her ducks or turkey for Christmas dinner there too. Oh and the bakery there would always give the children a cookie if they were good and let their Mothers shop. It was one of their butter cookies with red cherry or red or green surgers on them. They had all kinds of good cookies, pies, cakes and breads. And if you wanted sometime special they would do that too.
Now if you wanted Flowers then you would have a short walk up West 2nd Street to Zimmermans Florest Shop. They had trees, wreaths, garlin and hot house flowers and roses for sale. In side that wonderful place would be all kinds of flowers and you could get vases to put them in too. If you went into the hot houses you could find African violets and Poinsettia plants. The Norfolk Pine trees too. Some Paper whites and other forced bulbs too. they had a big pine tree out front that they would trim with lights and a big star was placed atop of the chimmy of the hot house.
Then there was Parsons. Here you could buy your clothes from baby to lovely lady all under one roof. Mom and I would go there last. She would look for a blouse for Aunt Alice or a skirt for that Christmas Eve party. She could also find that apron or towel for another member of family. I would sneak off to find that Christmas hankie for her or Aunt Alice or Mary. I one time found that apron that was a hit of the Holiday party she and Dad had. You could also find table cloths, napkins, ladies stockings, little girls socks and many other things.
But if not there we would go to Bennets or to Shipleys or Hendricksons Store or to the Hallmark Stores. There were times that we even went to one of the four 5 and 10 cent stores. There was a small shop called The Leather Store and that is where Mother would get Dads wallets or even his one Nerrelco shaver. Dad got Mother a beautiful tooled leather hand bag there one year. And I got one too. I still have them both. There still smell so good and are in fine shape. There was also a store that was called Harold's Smoke Shop. there Mother would get her Vogue or House Beautiful or Better Homes and Gardens magazines. Dad use to smoke a pipe and she would get his tobacco there too.
The very last place she would head was to a small candy store and I am so sorry but I have forgotten the name of it. There she would buy the turtles that my Father use to love or maybe some of the ribbon candy.
Oh how I do miss some of the stores that use to make up my Christmas buying list so much easier. Now that was one stop shopping in my day! Oh yes, and the parking was free during those days before Christmas. How wonderful it was to shop in down town Frederick in my time.

In town, it is looking like Christmas.
Yes dears, it is looking more and more like we have Christmas launched. The trees that needed the new lights on Market Street, have them up and on. They looked so very nice for First Night.Their twinkling so merrily while the bands on the corners were playing the usual Christmas songs and a few new ones. Many a brave soul struck out to find that one of a kind gift from the many stores that were open last night.
At Nanny Goat Crafts we had a few people come in asking questions about sizes of baby clothes and sweat shirts that we have. A few bought the mittens and caps that were for the adults and the kids sizes. The aprons got a good looking over and so did the fingertip towels with the Christmas designs. Then with their bags in hand off they would go to listen to the band or go for the great dinners at Brewers Alley, or Bushwallers or Volts restaurants.
Some people had their pups with them, out and about with that great dog companions. Even the dogs had winter wear on so they were ready for the cold. And, oh yes, I almost forgot that one young lady had her cat with her dressed in a Santa suit. He looked very happy to be in it too!
All in all I do believe that Christmas has gotten a great start here in down town Frederick, Maryland!

There are 23 more shopping days till Christmas Day
Yes we are in that Christmas shopping time. With that all too familiar refrain of Bah Humbug when shopping for that just right gift. I have heard it today in my shop from two young women were here shopping for their mom. They could not decided on what she might like because mom had everything. So I suggested a washcloth. They wanted to look at them and I told them that they are hand knitted of cotton. They looked them over and I suggested getting a basket and some favorite bath salts or soap. Making up a bath basket. So mom could take it into the bathroom with her. They took two for mom and two for Auntie. Then went on down town to eat lunch.
The colors here are for everyday. The ones on the bottom right are our Christmas ones.
They are $3.00 each or 3 for $8.00. All found in our store Nanny Goat Crafts. 15 E. 2nd Street, Frederick Md.

Thanksgiving has always been over the roadway and thru the neighbourhood for me. Mon and Dad lived here in town all of their lives. So, when the kids and I would head for Grandmas house, we would not go too
far. We would get ready for the Thanksgiving Day by watching the TV and getting to see Santa at Macy's in
New York arrive in hes sleigh in the parade. Then while the kids watched that I would be baking or cooking something to take along with us for the "big spread" as Dad would say.
Hitting the front door of Moms house we could smell all the trimmings being cooked. I would hear " they are here" ring out and the kids echo it back. The house smelled so good of the great dinner that would be in about an hour. Dinner table almost set the last few things that had to be in place before the people and food
could be served. Moms kitchen was busy place and if you didn't have something to do then you were told to go keep your father busy or gramps.
The turkey was still cooking even tho Mom had been up at 5 to put it in the oven. I can still see the alumin tent over the top of that turkey. The dog was having fits with all the good smells and getting under foot. I was to make sure that the dog got out of Moms way. So I would put her upstairs in my old room with the gate up so she could hear us. Poor dog! I would return to the kitchen and be put right to work. I had to
get the radishes cleaned and cut. Then put out the pickles and the watermelon rhine and the olives. The carrots and celery and radishes were put on the cut glass tray that was in the buffet. Oh and yes we cant forget the cranberry jelly." Here take this out and put it on the table" was one of the main statements that would greet me when I would try and get back into the kitchen. I would grab a plate for what ever would make and put it on the table or the buffet. The buffet was where coffee and desert was placed. There was always a lot of goodies to eat at Thanksgiving time. Pies, cakes and cookies. Breads and rolls were placed on the table. One bread that was always on that table was Sally Lund my Moms favorite bread from Williamsberg, Va.
Then when the turkey was nice and brown, taters whipped just right and all was right with Mom there was the grand entrance to the Dinning Room. Dad at the head of the table, the kids to one side and I to the other. Mom would sit at the end of the table nearest the door to the kitchen so she could get things we might have forgotten. Dad carved the big turkey and pass things around the table. When everyone was served he would say the prayer for Thanksgiving. Then like a kid he would yell " let's eat I am starved, your mother didn't give me breakfast" and laugh. But Thanksgiving was one of the main days that Dad was always "on Call" and of course that darn phone would ring. Mom would answer it with " they know you just sat down to eat. They can smell it" Sure enuff it was the hospital and Dad would have to go.
But all in all Thanksgiving would always be time of family and good food and friends. I am glad for my family and friends. Thankful for everyone and everything I have. I feel sad for all the families that are apart this year with family over seas that cant sit down and have dinner with them. I pray that those that are away are safe and that they will get a good meal for this Thanksgiving. God bless us all.

Halloween of years gone bye.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN Everyone!
Yes it is that time of year that we think back on fond times as a kid on Halloween. In the stores, for a few weeks now, there has been an array of different costumes. Adult, all sizes and styles. Children of all ages and sizes too. I have even seen some for the wee little ones. Devils, witches, bats and kitty cats. Batman and super heroes. Bar maids, ghouls and ghosts. These are what are out there now.
But when we were much younger there was not as many super heroes. Superman and the Green Hornet and the Invisible man were just a few. Then we had Casper the friendly ghost and Wendy the little girl witch. We had clowns and fairies and peter pan. Panda bears, cats and horses.
We would carve the Jack o lanterns out on the kitchen table and make them look so mean. We saved the seeds to grow pumpkins for next Fall. After eating dinner we would get ready for the Tricks and Treats fun. We could go out after dark only if our Dad or Mother went with us. Oh and only in our neighborhood. We even made our own bags to go out with.
Mon and Dad would go thru all of our candy and make sure it was all wrapped or made of something the neighbours told them they were giving. Sometimes we would get money like a dime or a nickel. We were really lucky if we got a coin and a candy bar. Candy, caramel apples, hand pulled taffy and popcorn balls. Now that is what we got. Maybe even some of Mrs Ds fudge or popcorn balls. Mrs Brown gave home made cookies.
After wards there was a movie to go to at a friends house. With hot witches brew and broom straws ( cheese sticks). We would all sit in a ring side seat for the movie and after that it was time to go home and get ready for bed. Many of us did fall asleep right away that night. To much candy and was that a bat at the window?
So this year while you are sitting on your sofa with a hot cider in your hands waiting for that first Trick or Treater remember your own time as one of the kids. Someone once told me I could write a book and sell it fast just by remembering times gone by. Maybe you should keep a book on all those time that are going bye so fast.

Changeing weather into Fall
Fall is most assuredly here. There has been a cooling down of the temps and a bright sun it the morrring sky. Oh and don't forget to night there will be a full moon.
I remember that when Fall came Mother and Mary would pull out the wool blankets from the cedar chests or the old mothballs. They would hang them full length on the lines so they could air them out. But, I don't think, that the smell of mothballs will ever loose its heavy smell. This was the beginning of Fall cleaning in the house. Windows were washed inside and out and the curtains were taken to the cleaners. The furnace was then cleaned by RJ Smith and oil was ordered Thur Blue Ridge Oil company.
Dad would get all the garden tools cleaned up and he would have Paul Barns sharpen them before Dad would put them away. All but the rake. That would soon be in great demand with all the tree leaves to rake up. Then Dad would put up the stakes around his azaleas and his box woods. Which he then would wrap and nail the burlap around. then as the leaves would start falling he would work in the yard raking when he had time. He then would place the leaves in the area between the burlap sides all the way around the azalea beds. I would get out there after classes and help him work in that yard. I use to love playing in the dirt. LOL. Oh and now we were ready for the first frost.
The local churches would have in the kitchens baked goods and hot cocoa and cider after church each Sunday. Oh my those baked goods were very good. Those ladies worked hard on the Saturday before Sunday church.
In Frederick there were many Fall things to do. We would help our neighbours to gather nuts and work in the gardens to finish up gleaming them for winter. Bigger boys would help their fathers cut and deliver wood to alot of Frederick family's. They would go door to door seeing if anyone needed wood. My Dad would always get wood from the same man each year. The schools had Home Coming and Football games and parades with floats then we had bond fires.
We really could not wait till October and Halloween then there was the next holiday Thanks Giving. Oh my what a Fall we would all have!
HAPPY FALL YA ALL!!!!

Hi ho off we go the the Great Frederick Fair!
Oh yes I have had many good times at the GFF. Mom and Dad and I would pile into the Chevy and go to the Childrens Day at the Fair. Sometimes my Dad would have to beg off because he had to do surgery on
someone. But each year on Friday of the Fair Mon and I would go see the Household building at the Fair.
She knew alot of the sewing ladies and she made sure that I would see all the great quilts. The clothing and household sewing with the many ribbons hanging from them were a beautiful sight. The quilts were hung from the rods that hung from ceiling of the tall building. There was handy work also and the clothing there too. Knitted or crocheted work lay on a tierd stand in the middle of the building. There were also many pies and cakes and canned goods too. All lined up along the walls of the one side of the building. Fudge and cookies and other candy was there too. Oh what a wonderful sight it was.
Out on the grounds you could go for a pony ride or ride a bumper car or a merry go round steed. Play bingo for dishes or glasses or canning jars or alot of other things. Alittle farther down the row was farm machinery with tractors and hay wagons. There was the Farm buildings that housed the smaller farm animals chickens, ducks, geese, bunnies and pigeons. I use to show my chickens there as I grew up and had a small farm set up with my hubby Gary at the time. The chickens won 1st 2nd and 3 rd prise ribbons. In another building farm crops were shown. Wheat, corn and Barley were there to see and then there were the farm garden crops. We would see sunflowers and roses there too. Everyone was sporting a prise ribbon. Mom would always love to see the roses. She loved roses and had a few in our back yard on Lindbergh Ave.
I know that I have tucked away the ribbons that I won for my sewing and for the chickens I have raised. But it was one wonderful and fun time I had that has lived on with my daughter Kelly Smith. She has entered alot of her photographs. I know she has a great talent for taking photos in black and white. The ones that win decorate our walls here on 2nd Street in many rooms. Each with the ribbons that it has won in the frame with the picture.
So, I cant wait till I can go and see the Fair this year, for I know she has entered 7 new pictures and I know she should win on one of them. So, I hope, all of you will go and visit the Great Frederick Fair!!! Ride the rides and eat the great food made by all the good people of the organiations and churches that work so hard out there every year.

Oh what a water mess we had
Today started out to be a beautiful Saturday for us all. When I took out my sign to the curb I noticed water running in the gutter. I had seen this same small stream yesterday but took no mind to it. But today I saw where it was coming from. I walked up a few feet in front of my neighbours house and looked down on the walk to see water coming up thru a water turn off cap for #19s home. A home of a family friend. I went back into the store and called the city and they said that their man would be right out to see the problem.
Well that was about 1030 AM. By 130 PM a very tire man showed up to tell me another man would be back to see what was wrong with the turn off. Well after about 15 mins. my dear friend that works for the city Joe came up in his own truck. Poor guy has been called here about 4 times in the past 2 years for the same water problems at this very spot. Seems he is the one that is always on call that day. He went right to work and he was very kind enough to tell me what he was doing. I then went back to work in the store. By and by two others turned up and a backhoe. Boy that slot of noise after they came. But they got the work done and the new pipe put in by the time it was 345 PM. No leaner's these guys they get things done! I"m
glad that there are guys like Joe working for the city when we need them. I am also glad he was on call today. I knew that when he shows up the problems are always worked out.
Now # 19 will have water and I know all will be a beautiful Saturday night. Oh, and Joe if you read this Thank you so much for the job well done!

A rainy day in Frederick
Ah, yes it is a light and gentle rain here today. And oh yes course it is a Sunday.
Rain gear is out along with the church goers. Brightly colored clothes and the
umbrallas, some of which clash, but nun the less very needed. Cars go swishing
by in a great hurry for a parking place close to the church. Right now the sun has
thoughtfully deceided to peek thru the clouds. I am thinking that the sun is trying
to help the last of the church goers get to the church without getting too wet.
When you live downtown you can always get to church on time. Or you hope you can.
With the rain it just makes you want to curl up with a book and find out just who stole the
crown from that English tower. Sometimes the rain makes you want to come out and wade
in the puddles or the curb gutters just to splash. But what ever it makes you want to do
it does help the many gardens and lawns grow. I say thank you for the rain dear God!!

Back To School
Oh yes, I did say those awful words. But, I think about this, most kids dont really want to miss that next step in thier education. For some it is a begining, to others it is a middle and to the next set it is the rest of the upper 4 years of the ladder. Then there is the even bigger step: College! But where ever you are in your education I wish you all a very interesting, exciteing and fun filled new year of school!!

Help Brighten up Frederick City for Christmas
If you don't already know, we here in Frederick, Maryland had the worst blizzard in years this past winter.
It hit with such a hard blow that we have lost most of our Christmas lights that were in the trees downtown.
With that blizzard also came the cost of just clearing the streets. Now the city has had cut backs in finance too. And that has lead us to the problem: we dont have the money to replace the lights to light up Frederick for the holidays.
So the downtown business people have a plan. Everyone can chip in $20 to help with the cost of a string of
lights or sponcer a tree for $120. But they have forgotten us, the little guy! I know that I am hurt by this. I feel that I have the right to try and give something to this cause. So I am saying give all the people of Frederick a chance to help!!! I own a very small company in down town Frederick. And thru this company I will be selling a given craft so that I can raise Money for the lights. I may not make too much as to sponcer a tree but, I sure am going to try and help light up some!!! I am also asking for all the people of Frederick and surrounding areas, who enjoy the light trees in Frederick at Christmas time, to help out too. I am not asking for the $20. I am saying give what you can and send it to the City of Frederick or bring it to me I will get it there. We maybe in hard times but we can give a few pennys to get a joyful smile at Christmas time for all of us youngseters and the elders too.
So what do you think Fredericktonians can we do this?? I think we can.
