The first sightings of Spring are the Robins here in Frederick. Our poor dears are very cold and very hungry. I set out to feed them seed like I do for most birds. But I found out that our Robins are finicky. The much prefer cookies and cake crumbs and of course bread. They must have been eating at someones house all Winter long that could part with this food stuff. They sure didnt eat here at my window. But they found that the bird seed was not that bad and finished that off too!
After fixing the birds food I took a cup of coffee out to the store with me and started to work on the fabric that I have in my storage bins. I found alot of red check and yellow flowered fabric just great for the picnic clothes and napkins. Maybe even some nice pot holders and pads. I think I have enough for an apron or two too. I found a stash of little girls dress patterns in the box also so I feel there will be some cute dresses in the window too.
Looking thru some of my crafting books I found a pattern for a paper back book cover that I have thought of making for all you book worms. This will hold you book and in case it with a protective cloth cover. These should start coming out in the Spring goodies in the next week or two.
But, dont forget, that we still have the cold weather goodies for what seems like the longest winter on record. There are hats, scarfs and mittens for adult and youths and babies. We still have a few blankets for baby too. For the coffee drinker we have a new design for a red plastic coffee mug. Beautiful hearts with a key on a everweve insert. There are hearts and flowers on Bread cloths, finger tip towels and the mugs. We have a few tees with Easter and hearts too. Oh Spring, are you on your way??
Happy Ground Hogs Day!! Our dear Phil has told us that he did not see his shadow lucking around today. So we must think that Spring is right around the corner. With Robins on the ground and in the trees singing their little hearts out so joyfully. I find that the snow has started to melt away. Much to the upset of my dog Annie, her snowman has run away for another year.
With all this in mind we here at the Nanny Goat Crafts company have been pulling out the patterns for the Easter goodies and Summer time fun clothes. There are table goodies and picnic items on the table for Spring and Summer. Little girls dresses and little boys shirts and short for both in the cutting room too. BBQ and regular aprons, hot mitts and border towels already cut and awaiting their turn on the sewing machine. Some new designs for the baby wear and things for their rooms being made in counted cross stitch in our sewing baskets awaiting for me I musts get ready now to open the door to the store.
So my dear friends, Nanny Goat Crafts waits for this Spring to hit in Frederick with open arms and a full window of goodies.

Oh Joy It is snowing!
Well the weather man for once was right we have snow! It is very nice to get time to watch the snow fall. But I am very busy in the store: Nanny Goat Crafts. I have sold out of mittens and tams and caps. The adults have been coming in and picking them up right and left. My needles can't keep up with the orders too.
We here at Nanny Goat Crafts are crafters that make things that people can wear or use in everyday life. We make things for baby, youth and adult. Small to ex large in most things. We also make goodies for the household like towels and mugs and bread cloths and wash cloths and aprons and hot mitts and tablecloths and of course pillow slips. These are sewn or we do counted cross stitch on them. Or they are hand knitted. The choice of colors are many some solids some ombras. Home made clothes are, for now, for baby but in the Spring we hope to have a small line of adult clothes. We have one line called Kidd's Clothes which is for the wee one to the 6x child. The adult line will be, I think, called Old Nanny's Closet. We have just started looking into the name and will let you all know. I just think you all will love our lines as they progress into the Summer. Think back on some of the old fashioned clothes you use to wear and come see what we might have by mid Summer.

Oh I can hardle wait.......
As it gets closer to the time for Santa to come We here in Frederick,Md have a Kirs Kringle parade. Frederick, Maryland, being of German history, felt a few years back that we had forgotten our past. So we made December 10 th. this year the date of the parade. Hard candy and Candy Canes will be given out during the parade from the costumed people walking in the parade. This historic Santa is of German/Dutch decent. He arrives with his helpers and of course Black Peter. He is for the bad boys and girls. He would go in and give naughty children coal in their stockings. So this Friday will be the parade at 6:30 PM down town from East Street's Shab Row shopping area to Bakers Park where the city will host the City tree lighting. So bundle up the little ones and your selves warm for it will be cold out there. At this time they say we could have some snow flying. See you there!

In my time.....
In my time when I was younger there were lot of different stores in down town Frederick. But Christmas was still a big thing in town. We could find all that we needed in down town. There was not the Malls of today that we have. Yes in the late 1950s we got the 7th Street shopping center. But most of us had to be content with the stores that were down town.
To start the Holiday there was a Santa parade. That was when Santa came to down town. He would have a small house outside of a 5 and 10 cent store. Then they moved him into that store where they gave him a space to have pictures taken with him sitting in a big gold chair. During the day you could find him walking the streets of our small town. He would talk to all the children and find out if they were naughty or good. Once and awhile you could find him looking at the trees at Cappello's food store or the ones next to the F & M Bank. They all smelled so good. There was fur trees and spruces and white needle pines. The Crutchley's Trees were the ones on the side of the bank and he made garlins and wreaths too. He would also have Mistletoe, you know that stuff that people use to kiss under. But it was real!!
Mother would go to Cappello's and buy her groceries there. Mr Cappy or Pappa Cappello would have them bagged and sent to home for us like he did for sooo many people back then. He delivered! They had a big black paneled truck that would come right to your door and bring things. While Mom was there she would place her order for red and green loaf bread. That was for her special parties that she would have. She would also order her ducks or turkey for Christmas dinner there too. Oh and the bakery there would always give the children a cookie if they were good and let their Mothers shop. It was one of their butter cookies with red cherry or red or green surgers on them. They had all kinds of good cookies, pies, cakes and breads. And if you wanted sometime special they would do that too.
Now if you wanted Flowers then you would have a short walk up West 2nd Street to Zimmermans Florest Shop. They had trees, wreaths, garlin and hot house flowers and roses for sale. In side that wonderful place would be all kinds of flowers and you could get vases to put them in too. If you went into the hot houses you could find African violets and Poinsettia plants. The Norfolk Pine trees too. Some Paper whites and other forced bulbs too. they had a big pine tree out front that they would trim with lights and a big star was placed atop of the chimmy of the hot house.
Then there was Parsons. Here you could buy your clothes from baby to lovely lady all under one roof. Mom and I would go there last. She would look for a blouse for Aunt Alice or a skirt for that Christmas Eve party. She could also find that apron or towel for another member of family. I would sneak off to find that Christmas hankie for her or Aunt Alice or Mary. I one time found that apron that was a hit of the Holiday party she and Dad had. You could also find table cloths, napkins, ladies stockings, little girls socks and many other things.
But if not there we would go to Bennets or to Shipleys or Hendricksons Store or to the Hallmark Stores. There were times that we even went to one of the four 5 and 10 cent stores. There was a small shop called The Leather Store and that is where Mother would get Dads wallets or even his one Nerrelco shaver. Dad got Mother a beautiful tooled leather hand bag there one year. And I got one too. I still have them both. There still smell so good and are in fine shape. There was also a store that was called Harold's Smoke Shop. there Mother would get her Vogue or House Beautiful or Better Homes and Gardens magazines. Dad use to smoke a pipe and she would get his tobacco there too.
The very last place she would head was to a small candy store and I am so sorry but I have forgotten the name of it. There she would buy the turtles that my Father use to love or maybe some of the ribbon candy.
Oh how I do miss some of the stores that use to make up my Christmas buying list so much easier. Now that was one stop shopping in my day! Oh yes, and the parking was free during those days before Christmas. How wonderful it was to shop in down town Frederick in my time.

Yes dears, it is looking more and more like we have Christmas launched. The trees that needed the new lights on Market Street, have them up and on. They looked so very nice for First Night.Their twinkling so merrily while the bands on the corners were playing the usual Christmas songs and a few new ones. Many a brave soul struck out to find that one of a kind gift from the many stores that were open last night.
At Nanny Goat Crafts we had a few people come in asking questions about sizes of baby clothes and sweat shirts that we have. A few bought the mittens and caps that were for the adults and the kids sizes. The aprons got a good looking over and so did the fingertip towels with the Christmas designs. Then with their bags in hand off they would go to listen to the band or go for the great dinners at Brewers Alley, or Bushwallers or Volts restaurants.

There are 23 more shopping days till Christmas Day
Yes we are in that Christmas shopping time. With that all too familiar refrain of Bah Humbug when shopping for that just right gift. I have heard it today in my shop from two young women were here shopping for their mom. They could not decided on what she might like because mom had everything. So I suggested a washcloth. They wanted to look at them and I told them that they are hand knitted of cotton. They looked them over and I suggested getting a basket and some favorite bath salts or soap. Making up a bath basket. So mom could take it into the bathroom with her. They took two for mom and two for Auntie. Then went on down town to eat lunch.
The colors here are for everyday. The ones on the bottom right are our Christmas ones.
