The race is on.

With the pumpkins all cut and looking really sad Halloween is now just a memory. All but the candy and the Jack-o-lanterns.  We can see that the race is on for the next Holiday.  Tom is out in front but Santa is not too far behind.

Tom Turkey is really the next Holiday.  And with some of the pumpkins being looked at for pies, breads and cookies  that is a good thing.  The nuts and the acorn squash are now in the pantry. The temps are getting cooler and the firewood is up to the porch. I hope the fireplaces have been cleaned and made ready.  The apples are gathered into the makings for cider, sauce and pies.   There is a thought of snow flakes to come on Weds. day the 7th or Thurs. day the 8th. More and more things are out for the Thanksgiving day feast.

Tablecloths and napkins that match. The turkey platter washed and sitting on the dinning room table with all the fine china, crystal, and the silver.  All waiting that very important day of thanks.

But in the shadows, there is the now evidents of a very large figure. He is here way before his time. But with the reasons only the adults know he is here so that they can be ready for him to come into each home.  There are the trees out there already for Christmas and this man in a red suit to tuck gifts under the trees.

So who do you think will be here first??

Funny post Tom Turkey

Ok now I am not one for falling on the floor laughing too often. But I saw this sign in a window That I would love to tell you all about.

Tom Turkey is holding a sign up in front of Santa.  On the sign it said: " Oh not yet my friend!!"
And I agree with Tom. The Holidays are rushed this time of year.  I still might be old fashioned but I think that one Holiday should wait for the others to come and then go, before the stores have the products up for sale for the next.

Yes in my time we saw the Halloween things come in in late September and be gone by the week after the 31st. With all sales on items starting the day or 2 before that day.  Then on November 1st you would see the Thanksgiving goodies come into the stores.  You sure would not see Santa in the area till after that turkey was cooked and a good memory in our tummy.

Santa would arrive by sleigh on TV  on Thanksgiving Day. By that time he was welcomed. Then you would go to the stores and WOW how they had changed inside!  The ohs and ahs would be heard and that is when you could feel Christmas coming up fast.

Things have progressed I would say. But  I think that it makes it so hard for children to believe in both Santa and the Miracle that happened with the birth of Christ.  Yes the churches do a great job of making us aware of the birth of Christ during this time. But things have moved so fast now that some of the magic of Christmas has lessen.  Kids get told all too quick that Santa isn't real and they have gotten a flurry of the Christ child and then it seems like it is all gone. What has happened to the magic??

Why are we so eager to push all the fun and magic out of our Holidays??  I would say it is because we are in a hurry. All our lives we hurry up and never get there. Or maybe we do. Just when we find it that is when we look back and see we lost the fun and the happiness somewhere along the way.  So, don't be in such a hurry slow down and enjoy the fun you use to have with the children now.  Remember back when you were younger and there was magic and fun in the Holidays.  So be like Tom Turkey, tell the Holidays to slow down and then enjoy them. Each and everyone!

Your costume is a what?? Hurricane Sandi !

Here it is Halloween  week and who should arrive, The wicked witch of the ocean: Sandi!

Yep, this is the Hurricane unlike any other that this weather people has ever seen.  But for some strange reason it reminds me of the one called Agnes of the 1972 version. What ever her name it is going to be a wet one for All hollows Eve. Rain, Strong winds and Flooding is not what I would say is a nice way to have celebrate a fun Holiday.  Who wants to be huddled up in the house using candles to see with or the fireplace to cook with. Not me.  But if the weather men are right, we will need flashlights, candles, powder generators and goodness lets not for got the water in bottles.  I would much rather be out walking around with weird makeup on my face and odd clothes on my body getting candy form the houses with lights on in my own neighborhood. That would be more fun!!!  But no fooling around my dear friends and everyone please get your house ready for this one it could be very bad around here. I pray we all will be safe and sound after Sandi leaves us alone.  Please take care everyone!!!

As it turns out the question of, should I knit white pumpkin caps for the family, has been solved.
Most of you want the pumpkin  or orange colored ones.  So I have a great supply started. But with it being October now I would say you should get that order in for them.

Also I have a great Halloween shirt for you all.  It comes in a large size cotton tee shirt. Has a crew neck and short sleeves.  This shirt maybe machine washed in cool water and regular soap.  Then hang to dry.  With a warm iron for the touch ups.  To buy this shirt go to my web    NannyGoatCrafts.etsy.com  and order it from

That great Fall time.

School is in and the weather has started the Fall temps.  I am glad for this time of the year. I find that  with the cooler temps most of us feel a lot better.

There are things to do each weekend that has to do with fun times right in our home town.  The Great Frederick Fair is in town this week. There are rides and farm animals to go see.  Great food tents and these vendors are local churches and groups that we all know.  The Fair has been going Strong for many a year. I can remember it when I was  a child as well as when I grew up to be a teen. Then when I got married and had my family I took my children to see it. I use to enter my quilts in the Fair in the Household. I won a few ribbons too. Then once my children got to be teens they went with their friends.

Fall can mean a lot of different things to different people. It is a time of changes too. We see some of those changes in the trees and the animals. There are fruits of the fields and gardens that now are in the pantry or the root cellars.  Jams and jellies and pies and preserves all lined up on the shelves. Pickles and chutneys are there too.  All kept for the Holidays and Winter eating.

Soon the Winter snows could be on the land and the roads. That is when most of us look like Eskimos with all the Winter wear on.  I can say I can wait for this to come for some time later on.  But for now, I will take the cool/warm days of our time called FALL!

Is it a hint of things to come?

Ah, what a few beautiful few days we have had.  Sunday was breezy and cooler today was cooler, only 72.  We even had a light breeze blowing all day.  Tonight they are calling for the lows to get down to the upper 40s.  So is this a look into the future?  If so then it is time to get out a few caps and a light coat.  Or maybe even the pumpkin caps I have been knitting.  I have a new hat this year it is a apple cap.  Bright red cap with two small leaves coming out of the top of the cap.

With the cooler weather for the next few days, we all could use a shawl or wrap. One that is knitted and
warm against the breezes that are too cool. I have a bright red prayer shawl or a raspberry colored tri cornered shawl.  Both will keep the chill off and are in the store right now.  I use my green one to sit here and write this page tonight. The air that is coming in is a bit cool and yet feels oh so good.

Can you remember the snow that we got for the middle of the October fun? Well, that is when we really knew we might just need the shawls, caps, mitts and scarfs before the real Winter set in for a few months. I for one was glad to have the shawl, mitts and caps for Winter.  So, come on in and take a good look at the
new colors in all the cap, mitts, shawls and scarfs here at the Nanny Goat Crafts in down town Frederick,
Maryland.  I am open Tuesday thu Sunday most weeks.  Call if you would like to make sure we are open:
